PETA is offering a monetary reward to whoever can create chicken meat that cannot be distinguished from the real thing, can be sold commercially, but is lab-grown.
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) will reward the first scientist who can achieve such a thing, before the summer of 2012, $1 million. The scientist must be able to produce and compete in the regular market and in a large enough quantity to sell in 10 states in the U.S. It must also have the unmistakable taste and texture of chicken for both meat eaters and non meat eaters.
There will also be a panel to taste-test any lab-produced meat.
Research has begun for the production of such meat which is identified as vitro meat which is created from animal stem cells that are placed in a medium so they can grow. Despite these advancements, the group states that this vitro meat is still years away from being available to general public.
The animal rights group supports these projects because of the bad treatment of animals killed for food in the United STates - fish, chicken, pigs, cows. Some bad cases include chickens that are made to consume drugs to grow large to the point that the chickens become crippled. Some mother pigs have to be confined to tiny metal cages so that they won't be able to move. Other fish are taken apart while alive and conscious. PETA just wants to alleviate the suffering for animals.
