U.N. officials relayed on Monday that a former Nicaraguan foreign minister is likely to be the upcoming president of the U.N. General Assembly. The presidential position for the world body of 192 members, rotates according to region. Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann has been selected by the Latin American and Caribbean nations for their candidate for the session that runs from September 2008 to September 2009.
D'Escoto Brockmann was foreign minister in the late 1980's for the Sandanista Government. As presidential adviser on foreign affairs to the Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega, he addressed the General Assembly last September regarding climate change. If elected, he will replace Srgjan Kerim, an economics professor and a Macedonian diplomat.
